The year 2021 seems to be more than just another ordinary year in the country’s sports world as different sportsmen keep winning and bagging awards at different sports events across the world.
The women’s national cricket team, The Capricorn Eagles defeated Nigeria, Rwanda, Botswana and Kenya in June 2021 respectively, at the Kwibuka T20 Women’s Tournament that took place in Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali. Six nations took part in the tournament with Southern Africa being represented by Namibia and Botswana.
On the other hand, Namibia’s top soccer sensations have again made waves at the Premier Soccer League 2020/21 season awards that took place on Sunday, June 05 . 27 years old Namibian striker Peter Shalulile took top honours as he bagged 2022/21Footballer of the season and DStv Premiership player’s player of the season awards.
Deon Hotto also went away with MTN8Last Man standing award. Hotto who have also been a key player in the Brave Warriors squad that saw them win the 2015 COSAFA cup through his two goals at the finals against Zambia plays for South Africa’s Orlando Pirates.
Meanwhile, on monday night put Namibia on the sport light again at the Josef Odlozil Memorial event in the Czech Republic, as the country’s young athletes, Christine Mboma and Beatha Masilingi win gold and bronze medals in preparations for the Tokyo, s Olympic games. The two have been showing top performance and seem to be in great shape for the Olympic games.
While the country battles an escalated COVID-19 outbreak, and all national sports event called off, international sports is defying the odds in putting the country’s name in the map and flying Namibia’s flag high.
