GOING BACK TO THE 2000S.

Writer's picture: Fè

A quick recap on 4 fashion trends from the 2000s that have made a comeback.

We’ve seen the comeback of old movies, music and books, I think it would be naïve of us the ignore the fact that fashion trends from the early 2000s are back and the best part is that you could easily own them by; thrifting them, looking through the closets of those who came before you, and last resort find them in stores.

Here are the notable four:

1. LOW RISE BOTTOMS

Low rise denim was undeniably doing the most in the 2000’s, an era where washboard abs were presented as the height of sex appeal, and a thong was the belt you needed. Anticipated by the whispers of 2018 and an occasional here and there street wear picture from the cool kids of downtown Manhattan, the most malignant item from the mid- aughts is back. Low rise pants are back in fashion. And yes, this includes the baggy jeans, straight leg pants and any bottom really.

2. UNAPOLOGETIC “MINI” MINI SKIRTS

LISTEN!!! The mini skirt is back, yes we already covered it in our August issue, But hear me out: I am talking about that mini skirt that makes you want to bath in Holy water before putting it on, the one that might have the neighbourhood questioning your morals because it’s a really short mini skirt, I am not saying lose yourself on this one but the mini skirt is back and the Chelsea Girls from the ‘60s who took a stand and protested for the skirt’s place in the fashion world paved the way. Only I am talking about the mini skirt from the early 2000’s, very short yet playful.

3. DRESS OVER PANTS

In 2018 Maria Nepembe had a “not so far off” design for her clothing brand RIA the Boss Collection, hers was a skirt over pants: through that design, I saw the future, it would have been amazing. Today however the layered item is a whole dress. Well back in the 2000’s if you were Unsure whether you want to wear a dress or a pair of pants, you could wear both. A dress over jeans said you were girly but edgy enough to pair it with something unexpected. At least Ashley Tisdale will be ready, cause hey, if platform flip flops and UGGs can break through the “never again” barrier, the dress over pants can too.

4. GRAPHIC TEES

Let me be honest- I personally wouldn’t have known who Biggie and Tupac were, if it wasn’t for the 90’s graphic tees. On the girly side: in the 2000’s we saw celebrities like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan wear tees reading “STOP BEING DESPERATE”, “SKINNY BITCH” and “DUMP HIM”; as a means of winking at their tabloid personas. And in an era where your voice matters Graphic Tees are everywhere. We worked with a Graphic tee Designer (insert her brand) for our September Issue, whether you want your tee with a picture of your favourite band, or a simple cool statement, she can get you on trend.

The 2000s in their glorified nature advocated eating disorders and sexual assaults that had men blaming their actions on what women wore. And the looming possibility that the mentioned items could trigger yet another era of self-destructive tendencies and unforgiving behaviour from men is dispiriting. However, as the trends are already with us, we need to make sure we do not fall into the trap of reviving more than just the fashion trends from the 2000’s. Please remember to wear what you want, and not just because it’s on trend. Thank you for reading along, I will see you in our next issue
